Your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) letter will arrive in your mailbox by September 30th. Insurance companies must send this vital document to every Medicare Advantage and Part D enrollee. It highlights every single change coming to your health plan on January 1st.

Never file this packet away or toss it in the recycling bin. Reading the fine print now protects you from costly surprises down the road. Look out for these five warning signs that signal it is time to shop around.

1. Your Monthly Premium or Deductible Increases

Insurance carriers frequently adjust their pricing structures from year to year. Check whether your monthly premium will rise in the coming year.

Look closely at your annual deductible as well. A higher deductible means paying more money out of pocket before coverage even starts. Even a slight increase in monthly costs can add up quickly over twelve months.

Make sure your fixed healthcare expenses continue to fit comfortably within your household budget.

2. A Trusted Doctor or Hospital Leaves Your Network

Provider networks do not remain static over time. Doctors, therapy clinics, and hospital systems renegotiate their contracts with insurance carriers every year. If your preferred physician drops out of your network, your appointments will cost far more.

In some cases, out-of-network care may not receive any coverage at all. Never assume your doctors will stay in-network just because they accepted your card this year. Verify that your entire healthcare team remains fully covered for the upcoming calendar year.

3. Your Daily Medications Jump to a Higher Tier

Every prescription drug plan uses a tiered formulary system to set copays. Lower tiers feature low copays, while higher tiers carry much higher out-of-pocket costs. Carriers can move medications to different tiers whenever they update their annual drug lists.

Check if any of your daily maintenance drugs shifted into a more expensive pricing tier. Look out for new prior authorization rules or strict quantity limits as well. These coverage restrictions can create frustrating delays when you need an urgent refill at the pharmacy.

4. Your Maximum Out-of-Pocket Limit Goes Up

Every Medicare Advantage plan sets a strict cap on your annual medical spending. This cap protects your life savings if you face a serious illness or emergency. If your carrier raises this spending ceiling, your financial risk increases significantly.

You could owe thousands of dollars more before reaching total coverage protection. Make sure your maximum limit remains within a safe, realistic range for your financial situation.

5. Extra Dental, Vision, or OTC Allowances Decrease

Many Medicare Advantage plans offer popular supplemental benefits to attract enrollees. These perks include quarterly over-the-counter allowances, dental cleanings, and vision hardware credits.

Carriers often reduce allowance dollars or restrict where you can spend them. A plan might drop your favorite dentist or limit allowances to specific online stores. Review these fringe benefits carefully to make sure they still offer real value in your daily routine.
