If you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan, you likely have a “hidden gem” in your wallet: the Over-the-counter (OTC) Allowance.
Most plans provide a quarterly credit—often ranging from $50 to $150—to spend on everyday health items. These supplemental benefits are a key tool for managing your out-of-pocket health costs. But, in most plans, if you don’t use your balance by March 31st, it expires.
What Can You Buy?
Most people know they can buy Tylenol or bandages, but the 2026 OTC catalogs are much broader than you might think. Depending on your specific plan, your allowance might cover:
- Digestive Health: Antacids, fiber supplements, and probiotics.
- Eye & Ear Care: Reading glasses, contact lens solution, and earwax removal kits.
- Skin Care: Sunscreen (SPF 15+), moisturizing lotions for diabetic skin, and medicated powders.
- Safety & Mobility: Compression socks, raised toilet seats, and bathroom grab bars.
- Oral Care: Electric toothbrushes (in some plans), water flossers, and denture adhesive.
How Can You Use Your Benefit
- Check Your Balance: Log into your member portal or check your Flex/Benefits card app to see exactly how many dollars you have left.
- Inventory Your Essentials: Check the expiration dates on your current pain relievers, allergy meds, and first aid kits. Toss anything expired and add it to your “OTC Shopping List.”
- Order or Visit a Store: Many plans allow you to shop at retailers like Walmart, CVS, and Walgreens in Central Indiana. If you prefer to stay home, use your mail-order catalog to have items shipped directly to your door at no extra cost.
The KSS Tip: Think Seasonally
Use your Q1 (January–March) benefit to stock up on allergy meds and sunscreen for the spring. Use your Q3 (July–September) benefit to prepare for the upcoming flu and cold season.
