September mailboxes often fill up with thick stacks of insurance paperwork. Among those envelopes is one document you should never toss aside. It is called the Annual Notice of Change, or ANOC for short.

Federal law requires Medicare Advantage and Part D plans to send this letter by September 30th. This document serves as your official preview of plan updates for the coming year.

What Does the ANOC Letter Tell You?

Your health insurance plan is not static. Carriers adjust their rates, coverage rules, and benefits every single year. The ANOC highlights every difference between your current coverage and next year’s terms.

Pay close attention to four main areas when opening your letter:

  1. Monthly Premiums and Deductibles: Check if your monthly costs or out-of-pocket maximums are increasing.
  2. Prescription Drug Rules: Verify if your medications moved to higher pricing tiers or require new approvals.
  3. Doctor and Pharmacy Networks: Ensure your primary doctors, preferred specialists, and local pharmacies stay in-network.
  4. Supplemental Allowance Changes: Look for updates to dental, vision, hearing, or over-the-counter benefits.

Why People Accidentally Throw It Away

The ANOC usually arrives packaged alongside a much longer document called the Evidence of Coverage. Because the combined packet is thick, many people mistake it for junk mail. Others assume that staying happy with their current plan means nothing will change. However, carriers can adjust networks and drug rules without asking for your permission.

Ignoring this envelope can lead to unexpected medical bills starting January 1st.

What to Do When Your ANOC Arrives

First, do not panic if you see cost increases or benefit drops. Seeing changes simply means it is time to review your options during Open Enrollment. Open Enrollment runs from October 15th through December 7th every year. You have plenty of time to switch plans if your current coverage no longer fits.
